Superregnum: Eukaryota Woese et al. 1990

Cladus: Synapsida Osborn, 1903
Ordo: Therapsida Broom, 1905
Classis: Mammalia Linnaeus, 1758
Species: Choneziphius sp.

Found in meterial from the Deurganckdok harbour. Practically perfect left Perioticum a dolphin Ziphiidae, 1850 Gray, aka beaked whale. (Class: Mammalia, Ordo: Cetecea (cetaceans), Subordo: Odontoceti (toothed whales)). Further identification to the level of Genus (Choneziphius?) and Species is unfortunately not possible with certainty because of two reasons: - None of the Ziphiidae described for the Neogene of the environment Antwerp is found in association with the hearing bones, so we do not know with certainty how the perioticum of, for example, a Choneziphius planirostris looks. In Antwerp, several other genera are found: Aporotus, Archaeoziphius, Beneziphius and possibly Mesoplodon and Ziphirostrum. The most common types are Choneziphius planirostris and Ziphirostrum marginatum. - In modern representatives of the Ziphiidae-family research has shown that the perioticum provides insufficient information for identification.
