Taxonomy [explanation]
Superregnum: Eukaryota Woese et al. 1990
Supergroup: Unikonta Cavalier-Smith, 2002
Cladus: Opisthokonta Cavalier-Smith, 1987
Regnum: Fungi Jahn and Jahn, 1959
Species: Prototaxites sp.

Comments:
It has long been thought that it was an alga. Recently, it was suggested that it is part from a large fungus. A third option is that it is a giant lichen.

Comments:
It is still not known what Prototaxites exactly is. It looks like fossil wood because of the clear rings but is certainly not a tree. It is thought to be a mushroom, algae or Lichen (symbiosis between fungi and algae). The suggestion 'mushroom' is slowly gaining ground. The specimen in the picture is 9.5 cm long. For more information check the website of Hans Steur, and Grondboor en Hammer 2006, no.2.
