Geology site description:

The Galapagos Islands form a relatively young volcanic archipel. The different islands were formed when the tectonic plate moved over a so-called hot spot. Consequently, the islands are different in age.

All islands of the archipel offer numerous exemplary volcanic landscapes, in different phases of formation: from recently emerged to almost completely weathered. Moreover, the archipel is an iconic locality for anyone interested in the emergence of the scientific theory of evolution. These islands played a vital role in the thought process of the young Charles Darwin.
