Geology site description:

In Maarn an island was landscaped with an outdoor exhibition of boulders in a former quarry. On the boulder island about 700 erratic bopulders are on display. The quarry is located in the Utrecht Ridge. This ridge is a moraine formed by the pushing of the ice sheet in the Saalian ice age.

You can see igneous rocks, metamorphic rocks and sedimentary rocks. The stones are originally from Scandinavia (carried by the ice) or coming from the basin of the Rhine and Meuse rivers.

The island can only be visited with a guide. For appointments and information, visit this Website.

Do you have (more) photographs of this geology site? Please send your photographs using the Geology Site Photo form!

The boulder island is located west of Maarn on the Utrecht Ridge. The island can be seen from the A12 motorway, where it is located nearby.
