Location description

In the La Luna quarry, to the northwest of Villa del Rosario, the organic rich deposits of the La Luna Formation are exposed. In the quarry, material is extracted for cement production.

The La Luna Formation is Upper Cretaceous (Cenomanian to Campanian) in age, and is characterized by a sequence of marine rocks deposited under anoxic-dysoxic conditions along the passive margin of nothern South America. This formation is characterized by alternating black or dark-gray limestones and organic calcareous shales

In the La Luna quarry, only the lowermost part of the La Luna Formation is exposed, just above the contact with the underlying Maraca Formation of the Cogollo Group. In the part of the La Luna Formation exposed int he La Luna quarry, shark teeth and mostly disarticulated bony fish remains can be found. The age of this part van the La Luna Formation is probably Cenomanian.
