Location description

Limestone deposits from the Karaman basin in the vicinity of Karaman contain various kinds of fossils from the Tortoniaan, Miocene, part of the Neogene period. The basin originated in the Oligocene (Chattian) and formed a channel between the Mediterranean Sea and the Indian Ocean until the Burgdigalian.

Caution! Collecting fossils and exporting them is officially banned.

Karaman is located in the south of Turkey. Deposits of the Karaman basin are for example exposed in the Karaman region in Lale. Finds can be done in river valleys, but also in fields.
