Location description

In the past there were temporary exposures in the area of Heist op den Berg. Heist op den Berg is a municipality in the Antwerp province, east of Lier. In the municipality-part of Zonderschot, the Zonderschot Sand from the Miocene are present in the subsurface.

These fossiliferous claysands are not found at the surface, but only when digging and pumping away the groundwater. In the past the geological groups BVP and WTKG have made temporary exposures for fossil collecting.

The fossils in the deposits are comparable to the fossils found in Miste near Winterswijk, The Netherlands (Bivalves, corals and other small fossils). The Miocene in the Antwerp area is a lot different.

A palynological investigation of the Miocene Zonderschot Sands (Berchem Formation) from the type\r\nlocality Zonderschot (northern Belgium) has revealed the presence of a diverse dinoflagellate cyst and acritarch\r\nassociation. The dinoflagellates reflect a shallow marine environment, although the oceanic species Nematosphaeropsis\r\nand lmpagidinium are prominent in the association and indicate the presence of an oceanic influence. This can be\r\nexplained only by the depositional area being l
