Many ammonites which are sold all over the world originally come from the region between Tulear and Mandronarivo in the southwest of the African island of Madagascar. The ammonites found here are found in limestone from the upper Jurassic period.
Limestones from the Cretaceous period are exposed on other parts of the island. There ammonites are found also.
Many fossils from Madagascar are traded. Export it is only alowed for sawed, polished, etc. specimens.
