Location description

The coast of North Jutland in Denmark is relatively flat. Hanstholm was pushed upward by a saltdome in the subsurface. The Bryozoa chalks from the Danian (part of the Paleogene period) were pushed up to the surface. On some places even the Cretaceous limestones are exposed. Part of the Hanstholm area eroded during the iceages and by wind and water. The highest point in the area is currently the Hjertebjerg Høj, 67 metres above sealevel.

At this Danish site you can find more information about this location.

Hanstholm is located at the coast of northwest Denmark. At the coast east of the harbour there are several coastal cliffs where the Bryozoan chalks are exposed. The best place to go is at Kællingdal, follow signs "stranden". You can also look for fossils east of Roshage.

Roshage: Sea urchins are common in the flint. Not easy to extract, but sometimes quite big. The locating is several hundreds of metres long. Is looks like these rocks are put here for sea defence.

East of Hanstholm is the Hanstholm camping site. From the camping site to the northeast and to the south between Hamborg and the beachaccess at the camping site, you can also find sea urchins.

Drag the map and zoom in or out for the best view of this locality.

Sea urchins (Echinocorys sulcata in large numbers), brachiopods, bivalves, stems of crinoids, bryozoa.
