Diatomophyceae

Diatomophyceae or Bacillariophyceae are a group of algae of which the microfossils have been found since the Jurassic period. Most species are only 10 to 100 micrometers. This species-rich group is widely used in research on the stratigraphy. Diatoms have an external skeleton of silica (quartz, SiO2).
