Limestone is a sediment consisting, of calcium carbonate (CaCO3). Limestone is a sedimentary rock composed of the (exo)skeletons of marine organisms such as coccoliths and foraminifera. Most of these fossils are microscopic, but very frequently also larger fossils are to be found. Limestone is mainly formed in (sub) tropical climates.
As a result of diagenesis, limestone can be converted into dolomite. If limestone is exposed to metamorphosis, then marble can be formed. Limestone is mined extensively worldwide as a Mineral resource' target='_parent'>mineral resource for the production of cement.
