In the vicinity of Griekwastad much Tigereye can be found. Tigereye is formed by simultaneous crystallization of the minerals quartz and asbestos in cracks in the rock. therefore Tigereye is found in veins.
The layers of brown and gold Tigereye have a beautiful shine in the sunlight. Each layer is created by the opening of a crack, and the filling of the gap by crystallization. This process was repeated many times over, which created the banded appearance of the Tigereye. The Tigereye is mined by local workers by hand.
