Geology site description:
Aouelloul is a crater nearly 400 feet in diameter in the desert of Mauritania. The edges of the almost round crater are 25 meters higher than the surroundings. The depth of the crater is 53 meters.
The crater was caused by impact of a stone meteorite in the Pliocene and is 3.1 (+ / -0.3) million years old. Around the crater many tectites occur. The crater was discovered in 1951 from the air.

The Aouelloul crater is located in central Mauritania to the east of the Oujeft Mountains, about 50 kilometers southeast of the town Atar. The crater is situated in a desolate area and is only accessible by 4x4.Drag the map and zoom in or out for the best view of this geology site.
