Geology site description:
Pamukkale is an area of hot springs where travertine is deposited in a kind of terraces. The water runs through the terraces on different levels downwards. Hard water of 35 degrees Celsius comes to the surface in multiple wells. After the water has come to the surface, the dissolved carbon dioxide escapes from the water. The result is that the water can hold less dissolved calcium and the calcium is deposited in the form of travertine.
