Geology site description:
Roussillon is traditionally known for its ocher quarries. Ocher was used as a pigment for paint and other forms of dye. In some old ocher quarries near the village the beautiful red and yellow colors can still be seen in the rocks. The quarries can be visited. Commercial extraction of ocher in the area has stopped a long time ago. Ocher occurs in iron-rich clay layers. Ocher is a special form of iron oxide.
