Geology site description:

The Externsteine are a remnant of an rock layer in an upright position. Some 70 million years ago the rocks in the area were folded. The rock layers were positioned upright by the tectonic forces in some places. Some layers are harder than others. Due to erosion, the surrounding strata disappeared and the more solid Externsteine are largely still visible in the landscape. It is clearly visible that these rocks have been rounded by erosion processes. The rocks rise to almost 50 meters above the surrounding landscape. Regardless of history, it is also wonderful to see.
