Geology site description:
More than 40,000 basalt columns can be seen at the Giant's Causeway. Although some seek answors about the forming of the columns in old legends, the basalts are actually formed by the cooling and crystallization of a lava flow. The layer with the mostly hexagonal basalt is up to 28 meters thick and was formed in the Paleogene, around 50 to 60 million years ago. A visitor centre is present.
