Geology site description:

Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa. The volcano consists of an area of 60 by 80 kilometers in which three stratovolcanoes occur. Kibo is the highest with 5895 meters. The other two are Mawenzi and Shira. On Kilimanjaro hundreds of craters occur.

Kilimanjaro is part of the African Great Rift Valley, where volcanic activity occurs. The mountain formed about 750,000 years ago. The only volcano which is currently active, is the Kibo. It is not known when the last eruption occurred.
