Geology site description:

The Pinatubo volcano is known for its first eruption since 500 years in 1991. It was one of the largest eruptions in recent times, which even had a global impact on the environment due to the large amount of dust in the stratosphere. The volcano was formed as a result of subduction of continental Eurasian plate beneath the Philippine plate.

The sleeping volcano erupted in 1991. Fortunately, the area could be evacuated in time. Pyroclastic flows, ash falls and lahars have subsequently devastated the area. In total, the volcano erupted about 10 cubic kilometers of material. After the eruption the summit of the volcano is at 1485 meters altitude. A 2.5 km wide caldera was formed.
