Geology site description:

This volcano is best known for its explosive eruption in 1980 when the top of the volcano was blown off. Currently, the volcano is still 2550 meters high. The volcano is a stratovolcano and is part of a whole row of volcanoes on the west coast of the United States. These are the result of subduction of oceanic crust beneath the continent.

During the 1980 eruption a large crater was formed at the summit of the volcano and  pyroclastic flows
rolled at high speed down the slopes. A large area was completely devastatated57 People did not survive the eruption.
