Geology site description:
Balloërveld is an interesting area. Besides pingo ruins there is still drifting sand, boulders, mounds, and archeological sites to see. Even fairly recent defensive trenches. On the north side of the Balloërveld is very good example of a pingo ruin. A pingo ruin is a remnant of a large round ice hill from the ice age. After the ice has melted, a round hole was left in the landscape with a ring of sand around it.
