Geology site description:

The Sint Pietersberg hill in Maastricht is a remnant of a river terrace of the River Meuse. On top of the Sint Pietersberg in many places you can still find pebbles. This was once the bottom of the river, some 800,000 years ago. By continuing erosion of the river is this now more cut into the landscape. Because even on the other side of the hill the river Jeker cut into the landscape, the Sint Pietersberg was left as a kind of island.

Below the surface of the Sint Pietersberg limestone deposits from the much older Cretaceous period are present. These are extensively excavated in the ENCI quarry that dug away almost the entire centre of the original Sint Pietersberg. Only the edges of the hill still remain. If you look at the ENCI quarry from the edge you see caves at several places in the quarry. These are man made mines that were made roughly from the 1500s. The underground quarries were made for the production of building materials.
