Geology site description:

The Plitvice lakes in Croatia were formed by carbonated water seeping to the surface. As the carbon dioxide escapes at the surface, carbonate is deposited in the water as travertine

The travertine deposits on both plant material and on other travertine. Over the coarse of thousands of years, many travertine dams were formed in the valley. Behind these dams, lakes formed. Water flows over these dames in a series of cascades. The combination of very clear water with travertine on the lake beds results in a beautiful spectrum of colors.

The Plitvice National Park has an entrance fee.
