At several locations at the Somerset coastline sediments from the Jurassic and Triassic periods are exposed.

Directions

Coastal fossil collecting locations in Somerset:

  • Blue Anchor Accessible by the road B3191 between Watchet and Minehead. Park at the side of the road and walk along the beach in direction Watchet. Beware of the changing tides! The sediments from the Triassic period contain many fish remains and fish teeth. The rocks are quite solid.
  • Kilve Follow the A39 road to Kilve from Quantoxhead. Take the 'Sea Lane' in direction of the sea and park at the parking place. From there you walk to the beach and walk along the beach to the east. You can find Ichthyosaurus bones and ammonites in the shales from the Jurassic period. In the hard concretions you can also find fossils.
  • Quantoxhead From the A39 road take the road to East Quantoxhead (Frog Street). Walk from the church in direction of the sea. On the beach walk westwards. In the shales from the Jurassic period you can find bones from dinosaurs like Ichthyosaurus. You can also find ammonites.
  • Watchet From Watchet take road B3191 to the west. After a hill you will see a campsite at your right. Park there at the parking site and walk to the coast. Walk westwards on the beach. Bones of Plesiosaurus and Ichthyosaurus can be found in the sediments from the Jurassic period. You can also find ammonites.

Finds

In the sediment from the Jurassic and Triassic periods you can find ammonites and bivalves. It is also possible to find Ichtyosaur or Plesiosaur bones.
