Location description

In Essex there are several collecting locations at the coast. Sediments from the Paleogene and Neogene period are exposed.

Directions

A few easily accessible collecting locations at the coast:

  • Waltom-on-Naze Follow sign for "The Naze" and take the footpath to the beach. In the sandlayers (Red Crag) you can find bivalves. Shark teeth, fish remains and bird bones are found in the London Clay.
  • Harwich Close to road B1352 is a dam to protect the harbour. From there to the south you can find shark teeth and ray teeth from the London Clay, Paleogene period. Sometimes mammal bones or remains of turtles and crocodiles are found.
  • Burnham-on-Crouch Bij Burnham-on-Crouch zijn sedimenten uit de Londen clay, Yperiaan, Eoceen, onderdeel van het Paleogeen tijdperk ontsloten. Fossielen worden gevonden op de kustvlakte en onder de klif ten westen van de plaats.
  • East Mersea Bij East Mersea zijn sedimenten uit de Londen clay, Yperiaan, Eoceen, onderdeel van het Paleogeen tijdperk ontsloten. Fossielen worden gevonden op de kustvlakte. Hier zijn ook Pleistocene afzettingen aanwezig meer naar de oostkant op de kustvlakte.

Finds

Red Crag: Bivalves and plant remains. London Clay: Shark teeth, fish remains, crabs, plant seeds, fossil wood, reptile remains. Pleistocene deposits: Remains of small mammals and freshwater gastropods and bivalves.
