Location description

In the western part of the Kzyl-Orda region (also spelled Kyzylorda), in the area north-northeast of the Aral sea, lower Eocene to upper Oligoceen strata are outcropping. These strata are rich in marine fossils (shark teeth, ray teeth and molluscs).

In this region, there are about seven Paleogene formations; the early-middle Eocene (Ypresian to Lutetian) marly clays and greyish green clays and silts of the Tasaran Formation (correlatable to the Ypresian Chat Formation on the Mangyshlak peninsula), the Bartonian-Priabonian (middle-late Eocene) sandy clays of the Akkulka Formation, and the Priabonian (late Eocene) Chegan Formation, consisting of yellowish green marine clays. These Eocene deposits are disconformably overlain by the yellow, orange and brown sandstoens of the early Oligocene Katanbulak Formation, which in turn is followed by the early Oligocene clays and silts of the Chilikta Formation and the late Oligocene sandstones of the Chagray and Aral formations
