In the badlands surrounding Belle Fourche (SD), the Upper Cretaceous Fox Hills and Hell Creek formations are exposed. These formations date from the Maastrichtian age and are rich in vertebrate fossils.

Most of the localities in the area are on private property. To collect fossils, permission from the respective landowners is required. The company PaleoAdventures organises guided tours to some of the sites.
