Location description

The still active Pecínov quarry near Nové Strasecí, approximately 40 km west of Prague, represents a beautiful outcrop of the Cenomanian-Turonian boundary in the Bohemian Cretaceous Basin (BCB). Between the late Cenomanian and Santonian, this basis encompassed a relatievley shallow seaway. The Pecínov quarry is located along the western edge of the basin. During the Cenomanian transgression, this region was gradually infilled by the fluvial and estuarine strata of the Peruc-Korycany Formation. In the middle and upper Cenomanian, the mudstones of the Pecínov Member were deposited. In the Pecínov quarry, these mudstones, deposited in a deeper, marine environment, have a thickness of 6.5 meters. The Pecínov Member comprised Oceanic Anoxic Event 2 (OAE2), in the quarry recognizable as a band of darker, organic-rich layers. Overlying the Pecínov Member is a 15 m thick sequence of rhythmically bedded, hemipelagic marlstones and calcareous mudstones, the Bílá Hora Formation. This formation isn Turonian in age.

Between 2012 and 2106, there was a lot of quarrying activity, resulting in great opportunities for fossil hunters.
