At Bathurst in the coastal cliffs various plant fossils from the Carboniferous period occur. All along the coast Carboniferous rocks are exposed. To the west there are outcrops of older layers. In some places entire fossil trees can be seen in the cliff. Collecting below the cliff is only possible at low tide.
