Location description

The Schneeberg in Aachen, Germany is a known fossil site from as early as the 19th century. These are from the upper Cretaceous, formations of Gulpen and Maastricht. The stratigraphy is as follows (from bottom to top): kalksteen van Vijlen (Vijlen limestone) -> kalksteen van Lixhe en Lanaye (Lixhe and Lanaye limestone or Orsbacher Feuersteinkreide) -> Kunrader kalksteen (Kunrader limestone or Vetschauer Kalk). When the fields have been ploughed, the hillsides are litterd with thousands of limestone fragments, giving the hill a distinct whitish colour - hence the name "Schneeberg", literally "snow hill".
