NV Buffalo Canyon
In Buffalo canyon diatomite from the Buffalo Canyon Formation is exposed. The diatomite is from the middle Miocene (18 million years old), part of the Neogene period. More than sixty species of plant fossils were found here. The paleoclimate was more moderate than present.
The fossils are preserved in lake sediments that are largely made up of the tiny skeletons of diatoms. The plants have fallen into rivers als flowed into the lake and fossilized. The fossil plants are white to light brown and are sometimes nicely contrasting with the sediment. The best place to look is in the vicinity of dark gray layers of volcanic ash.
