Location description

At Whanganui coast the Castle Cliff is located. Here several kinds of fossils can be found in beach sediments (sandstone) from the Pleistocene, part of the Quaternary period. Most fossils are found in the so-called Shellbed member of the Shakespeare Cliff Sand Formation.

Whanganui is located in the southeast of the North Island of New Zealand. The cliff is located on the shores of the estuary.
