Location description

The Aubach is a tributary of the Wutach. If you take the (wonderful) hike through this valley of  Aselfingen (near the Wutach between Blumberg and Bonndorf) up to Mundelfingen, you can find rocks from the Jurassic at various spots. The whole black' Jurassic (alfa to zeta: Hettangien, Sinemurien, Pliensbachien and Toarcien) to the lower parts of the 'brown' Jurassic (Aalien-Opalinuston) are exposed in this valley. Not all places are easily accessible, and the higher stonewalls are at the other side of the stream. Luckily, the Aubach can be crossed at many spots. Under the cliff faces you'll find rocks containing fossils. Unfortunately, you'll have difficulties tracing the precise origin of the rocks.

Bring water tight shoes or boots.

Aselfingen lies in the Wutach valley, between Blumberg and Bonndorf. Reach Blumberg over the B 27. At the roundabout, turn right towards Blumberg (K 5747 = Hauptstrasse). Follow the Hauptstrasse through Blumberg (sharp turns, first to the right, then to the left). Now, we descend into the Wutach valley. Follow the road to Blumberg-Achdorf, then go left (K 5743, direction of Bonndorf, Lindenstrasse). In Aselfingen right (Aubachstrasse). First small road right, then keep to the left. Try to park the car here and hike the rest. In the forest, you see the rocks. Try to reach them, through the forest and over the water. Further in the valley, you'll find more of the same.

Drag the map and zoom in or out for the best view of this locality.

Jurassic - the whole sequence, from the 'black' Jurassic to the lower parts of the 'brown' Jurassic (Aalien), with a.o. ammonites, bivalves, brachiopods en belemnites.
