Near Petroșani is a northeast-southwest oriented coal basin. Coal deposits from the Chattian, Oligocene, part of the Paleogene period are exposed. These coal deposits are mined. On many places along the Jiu river there are rock dumps in which fossils can be found.

Petroșani is located in the southwest of Romania, about 250 kilometers northwest of Bucharest. The basin is located between Cimpa in the northeast, and west of Campu Lui Neag in the southwest. The shown coordinate is only one of many dumping grounds.
