Location description

In several lignite mines near Tadkeshwar coal layers from the lowe Eocene (Cambay shale), part of the Paleogene period are exposed. In the sediments amber and various other fossils were found. The fossils found here are the evidence for the first existance of rainforests like we know today.

The quarries at Tadkeshwarare located in the Surat district, Gujarat, in the west of India. The quarries are located about 35 kilometers northeast of Surat.

Amber (sometimes with insects), plant fossils. About 700 new species of insects have been described from this site. The resin probably came from trees of the Dipterocarpaceae family.
