There is a bridge to the island from the mainland of Germany. Follow road 96 from Stralsund in direction Saßnitz. The cliffs are located at the eastern part of the island. between Saßnitz and the Königsstuhl (also in the Jasmund National Park). Fossils are found on the beaches.
Especially the beach of Mukran (Neu-Mukran) is very good. From the harbour, walk in the direction of Sassnitz. You can find belemnites, sea urchins, etc. Epeacially good in autumn after storms. (see map)
Before arriving in Saßnitz there is a quarry (Vereinigte Kreidewerke Dammann KG). Follow the signs for "Klementelvitz". After 1 kilometre you wil find the quarry. The limestone here is quite soft.Drag the map and zoom in or out for the best view of this locality.
Sea urchins, corals, bryozoans, brachiopods, gastropods, belemnites, ammonites, bivalves, nautilus and other fossils from the Cretaceous period. Also rocks from Scandinavia, wich were moved in the ice ages, can be found. For example graptolites have been found. You can also find flint sea urchins at the beaches.
