Location description

In Liessel is a sandquarry where fossils from the Miocene and Pliocene (part of the Neogene period) have been found. Because of the changed digging methods no fossils are found anymore today.

When the sediments were deposited, the area was located close to the shoreline. Later maybe even a riverdelta area. Therefore much plantmaterial was deposited in the sediments.
