Most Popular Fossil Locations
Gorges du Verdon, France
Paris basin gastropods
Not a specific locality. On shell paved paths fossils are regularly found. Also at storage locations of shell material.
- Shells are dregded up from the sea bottom at two locations. In the wadden sea there is a lot of shell material availible. One of the main exploitation sites is the Vliestroom, the channel between the islands of Vlieland and Terschelling. This site has already been exploited from 1908 onwards. The shell material from this site has a characteristic blue-grey color. The shell material dredged up from the Vliestroom is brought onshore in the harbor of Harlingen, and used all across the Netherlands to pave cylce- and foot paths. The fauna from the Vliestroom is dominated by Holocene Cerastoderma edula and Spisula species. The relatively large specimens of Ostrea edulis and Buccinum undatum are also striking. Occasionally, also Eemian species, like Mactra corallina plistoneerlandica and Acanthocardia tuberculata, can be found in this material
- The other location is the Westerschelde. The material from here is rich in fossils like shark teeth from the Neogene and Paleogene period. Mammal bones from the Pleistocene (Quaternary) also occur. When collecting, look for black shark teeth, dark brown bone material and yellowish amber.
