Along the Mazon Creek an in the surrounding area concretions have been found which contain fossils with fossilized soft parts. This is unique and present us with a good image of the biodiversity in the Carboniferous period.
The various sites form a gradient from salt water to fresh water fauna's.
In the area large scale stripmining was used to extract the coal.
