Location description

Along the Julianakanaal canal at Elsloo (province of Limburg) foosils were found in the past. When the Julianakanaal was built in 1932, the Schaeberg north of Elsloo had to be crossed. Several layers from the Miocene and Pliocene were exposed.

One of the layers was very rich in fossil prints and shark teeth. Since than, this layer is known as the "Elsloo Sharkteeth Layer". The layer contains glauconite.

Several of the fossils collected are now stored in a meseum depot of the Natuurhistorisch Museum in Maastricht.

The sharkteethlayer is now under the water surface and unfortunately not accessible anymore...Maybe future works on the canal will expose this layer once again.
