In the area around Winterswijk in the east of the Netherlands, at various places sediments from the Miocene are found just below the surface.
In 1968 fossil rich layers were found in Miste. This layer is directly under the boulderclay layer. On the “terrain Berenschot” in 2003 an artificial exposure was made for fossil collectors.
The sands are from the middle Miocene (part of the Neogene period), and are very rich in fossils.
In Museum Freriks in Winterswijk you can view finds from Miste.
The last dig has taken place in 2013, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 'Werkgroep voor Tertiaire en Kwartaire Geologie' or WTKG.
