Gorges du Verdon, France
Nummulites France F3757
This quarry is known for its typical corals, bryozoans and fossil crabs. 98% Of the shark teeth found in this quarry are without the root. The limestone is from the middle Danien (part of the Paleogene period). At the edges of the quarry, the bryozoan mounds of the Stevns Klint Formation are exposed, while in most of the quarry, the coral limestones of the Faxe Formation are exposed. This formation is formed by a local cold water coral reef. In a small part of the quarry, the "Baunekule facies" was exposed. This facies consists of softer limestones with a particularly rich and very well-preserved mollusc fauna. Unfortunately, nowadays the Baunekule facies is completely excavated, and can no longer be excessed in the quarry.
Near the quarry in the village of Faxe there is a geological museum. The museum is open from 14 to 17 hour, tuesday to saturday. The adress is Østervej 2 in Faxe. They can also help you with the identification of your finds. See also the museum website.

The quarry is still in use, so be careful with the traffic in the quarry. The quarry is accessible by several paths. Entering at your own risk off course. Large groups first have to ask for permission at the office.Drag the map and zoom in or out for the best view of this locality.
