Location description

The Kaloot beach is a very accessible fossil collecting site. The fossils on the beach come from eroding Paleogene, Neogene and Quaternary layers in the Scheldt. The finds are similar to those at Cadzand (also see the description of Cadzand). Yet, at the Kaloot, Paleogene fossils are rarer, compared to Cadzand.

You can also collect fossils at Ritthem, between Vlissingen and Kaloot. Nonetheless, the best location is "De Kaloot".

The Kaloot beach is located east of Flushing near the Borssele nuclear power plant. Take the final exit before the beginning of the tollroad to Terneuzen (see maps). Follow the Weelhoekweg road and the Europaweg Zuid road until you arrive at the dike. This is close to the power plant. Park on the left in the sharp curve in the road.

The fossils can be found between the harbour entrance and the power plant. At low tide is is best to collect fossils.

There are plans for enlargement of the harbour. That would destroy this special beach.

Drag the map and zoom in or out for the best view of this locality.

Shark teeth, rayteeth, gastropods, and bivalves are most common. You can also find mammal bones. The finds are from the Miocene (part of the Neogene period) until recent. If you are lucky you can find mammalbones or hollow bird bones from the Pleistocene.

There are 78 photographs of fossils from this location in our Fossil ID System.
