In the Shernikal quarry, northwest of Dekani in Slovenia large numbers of foraminifers are found. They occur in the Alveolina limestone from the Eocene (part of the Paleogene period). The size of the foraminifers ranges from several millimetres to several centimetres.

The area is located in the southwest of Slovenia, south of the Italian city of Trieste. The Shernikal quarry (coordinates of Shernikal: N45 33 17.4 E13 52 43.9) is located northeast of Dekani.
At many places in the area around the quarry the limestone is used to build roads. Here you can also look for fossils.
