The Permian is a geologic period that lasted from 299 to 252 million years ago. Further development of many reptiles and mollusks. The first Gingko-like trees occur. The number of amphibians and insects decreased. The primitive armored fish became extinct. At the end of the Permian there was a large mass extinction after which the number of species decimated.
