Sea Urchin Collyrites dorsalis
The hypostome is the mouth plate of a trilobite, which was used in the processing of food. It is mainly found in trilobites that are buried alive. In moulting remains the hypostome comes loose often and is missing in the trilobite fossil. Trilobite fossils with hypostome are rare, not only because it is easily detached from the trilobite, but also because it generally lies within the cephalon. It is rarely noticed, let alone being prepared.
In this Gerastos the hypostome has been uncovered (collection F. Lerouge)
