The Tethys was an ocean whioch was located between the paleo continents of Gondwana and Laurasia. This ocean existed during the Mesozoic and the first part of the Cenozoic, from the Triassic to the Paleogene periods (approximately between 230 and 35 million years ago). The current Indian Ocean and Mediterranean Sea are partly the remnants of this ocean. The western part of the Tethys ocean is also called the Tethys Sea.
