Chimaeriformes or Chimaera are a class within the cartilaginous fish that already appear in the fossil record back in the late Silurian or early Devonian. Living representatives of these creatures still occur today. They're often called ghost sharks, ratfish, spookfish or rabbitfish.
Fossil remains of these animals can be found as dental plates from the Neogene.
