Marble consists of calcium carbonate, like limestone. Marble is limestone that is recrystallized by metamorphosis . This makes it very solid. Because of the metamorphosis, possible fossils have been lost.

Real marble is not to be confused with the marketing term "marble", which indicates a wide range of materials from limestone, which may or may not be correct.
