Dolomite is formed by diagenesis of limestone and has the chemical formula CaMg(CO3)2. Because of diagenesis magnesium ions (Mg) replace calcium (Ca) in the Crystal structure' target='_parent'>crystal structure. Dolomite is stronger than limestone and because of recrystallization any fossils present are destroyed. In the field dolomite can be recognized by its sugarlike shine and weathered surfaces that resemble elephant skin.
